From Sri Lanka, South Asia, to Afghanistan, Central Asia, to Mississippi, USA, Making Art Everywhere has brought art lessons to people in communities affected by disaster. In the midst or aftermath of trauma, art-making empowers survivors to view their surroundings and experiences anew.
MISSISSIPPI (2008-present)
In the Summer of 2008, we at Making Art Everywhere found ourselves in
Mississippi, our first foray in the USA. Hosted by The
Marsha Barbour Community Center and by Leilani Johnson, we worked with
Katrina survivors along the Gulf Coast. We reached over 100 children,
teenagers, adults and the elderly (click here for local news mention).
Painting the ocean was a hit. The residents’ views of their
surroundings had been indelibly altered by Katrina. Three years later,
scanning the waves through the lens of an artist for color and rhythms
brought a fresh perspective to a scarred coast.
We hope to return next year. Stay posted for news of our next exhibition and fundraiser to take place in New York.

SRI LANKA ART PROJECT
The Sri Lanka Art Project was an art program designed to facilitate skill-building and self-expression for children who were orphaned or made homeless by the tsunami. This collection of works spans a wide range of imagery born out of an island nation that manages to thrive artistically in the midst of internal struggle, from its ongoing civil war to the natural disaster created by the tsunami.
